Pet owners across Western Australia are forking out thousands to ensure their pooch is look its best. Globally the pet care industry has grown to a staggering $374 billion!
In Perth, Couture Canine offers luxury services such as facials, jacuzzi sessions, nail painting and stylised haircuts that can cost up to $500. They have amassed a large clientele who are willing to spend a lot of money for their pet’s grooming. Co-founder Charmaine Cayeux says, “ We have clients that spend over $400 a week and have done for 15 years . ”
Designer brands like Gucci are also looking to profit from the booming industry. They have released a pet collection that includes a $12, 000 dog bed, a $630 poop bag holder and a $570 designer leash. But are pet owners doing this for themselves or their pets?
Dr Innis, from Kingsway Vet Centre, says while grooming is necessary some people are taking it to the extreme. “ I’m looking at all these pooches with bow ties in their hair and flags around their neck. To that dog, it probably doesn’t matter. Your pet is happiest when it spends time with you. “
