Pets at Home shoppers shocked at new advert that appears to show groomer holding a dog’s genitals – My London

Pets at Home is a recognisable brand to any pet owner. With 453 stores and 316 grooming salons in the UK, the company has a nationwide reach, making it the go-to spot for all Brits’ animal needs.

However, recently that reach has taken on a whole new meaning after one startled member of the public spotted a rather strange looking advert outside one of the Pets at Home outlets. The picture that accompanied the text advertising the brand’s grooming services was of a person and a poodle – pretty normal, right?

That is until you notice where one of the human model’s hands is, down by the dog’s genitals. This wasn’t lost on the person that saw the ad, who took to the company’s Facebook page to point out the odd-looking pose to the pet store’s marketing team.

The post reads: “Good afternoon. Just wondering if you realised that the staff member/model is cupping the dog’s genitals in the promotional poster,” adding “if you have realised- what is the reason?”

The person also commented on the advert itself, which was informing people about Pets at Home ‘poodles & oodles’ treatment saying: “Hopefully the ‘poodles & oodles’ additional service isn’t a euphemism”.

Reddit eventually cottoned to the whole kerfuffle which revealed more details about Pets at Home’s response to the person’s concerns. It read: “Hello Elisha, thank you for your feedback, this has been passed over to our marketing team. Kate @ PetsAtHome.”

Commenters on the Reddit post were far more charitable to Pets at Home than the Facebook poster had been. Many agreed that the thing that looked like the dog’s genitals was in fact the member of staff’s thumb.

One person wrote: “I don’t think the person is cupping anything and is instead, placing their hand next to the dog’s hind legs in order to get the dog to stand still. I’m sure I’ve seen that whenever I’ve watched Crufts.”

Of course, there had to be some kind of pun to go along with the whole incident, this is the internet we are talking about after all. The original Reddit poster gets the crown for the best wordplay moment saying: “Pets at Home’s unorthodox marketing technique is the dog’s bol**cks!” – jolly good.

A Pets at Home spokesman said: “Pet welfare is our number one priority and we work hard to ensure all our customers enjoy their experience at The Groom Room, and ultimately leave feeling and looking their best.

“Sometimes we need to gently encourage our four-legged friends to stand up throughout their groom, but we would like to reassure our customers that this is a safe and standard dog handling procedure.”

This is referred to as stacking a dog, a fairly standard procedure in dog handling. It involves placing a hand gently behind the dog’s genitals to keep them upright. No pinching or squeezing is involved and no stress is put on the dog.
