Pets at Home appoints new CEO

Pets at Home has announced the appointment of Lyssa McGowan as group chief executive with effect from today (1 June).

McGowan was appointed to the board as CEO designate on 25 April 2022 and succeeds Peter Pritchard who after 11 years at the pet retailer has stepped down.

He had first revealed his intention to step down from his role in November 2021 and Pritchard had remained with the business to ensure a seamless transition.

Pritchard resigned as a director of the company on 31 May 2022.

Ian Burke, chairman of Pets at Home, said: “Pets at Home has thrived under Peter’s leadership. In the four years since his appointment as CEO, its share of the pet care market has grown significantly, and his strategy to leverage the group’s capabilities, bringing together joint venture veterinary services, grooming, product, multi-channel, and subscriptions has transformed the business into the UK’s market leading omnichannel pet care provider focused on serving the needs of the pet owner.

“On behalf of the board and colleagues across the group, I would like to thank Peter for his tireless work and dedication as CEO of Pets at Home. His leadership has given the business a firm foundation for growth long into the future, and he leaves with our very best wishes.

“I have no doubt that Pets at Home will continue to create value for all stakeholders under Lyssa’s stewardship, and I look forward to supporting her and her executive management team as they lead the business through its next phase of growth.”

Lyssa McGowan added: “Having spent the past six weeks working across all parts of the business, I have witnessed first hand the passion, dedication and expertise of all our colleagues and partners in making life better for pets and the people who love them.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter for his great leadership of this fantastic business and his support and guidance through the recent transition. He leaves the business in excellent shape and with a strong purpose-led culture that underpins its success. I am excited to work with the board and executive management team to continue building the best pet care business in the world.”
