AVON LAKE, Ohio — Ever since the former White castle restaurant, 519 Avon Belden Road, closed its doors nearly two years ago in Avon Lake, many wondered what would become of the space.

Construction crews have been at the location for several weeks and I can now confirm that the space will be transformed into a Mexican restaurant. Las Margaritas is scheduled to open in December.

Rogelio Hernandez, who has owned several area Mexican restaurants — including the Si Señors restaurants, El Jalapeños within Lakewood and the Mexican cafe in North Ridgeville — is bringing his passion for creating successful restaurants to Avon Lake.

“It’s not just a restaurant; it’s my passion, ” he said. “This is about how you feel in your heart. This is who we are, my whole family. I want my family to be part of it. We want to make this a good, nice place. We will work hard for it. ”

Las Margaritas will serve many familiar Mexican favorites, including tacos, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas and fajitas.

The restaurant space will be sleek and modern, with seating for approximately 120 people, plus seating in the bar. A patio is slated to be installed next spring.

“Of course we will have top shelf margaritas, and also plan to have a margarita sampler on the menu, ” said Hernandez. “We want this place to be a cool place for people to come and hang out. ”

Hernandez also noted that once things are up and running after opening, this individual hopes to add weekend brunch to the menu.

“There are not many places in the area doing Saturday and Sunday brunch, ” he or she said. “We would like to start offering breakfast burritos and other breakfast items on the weekends. ”

New businesses: It appears that the former Countryside Antiques space at 36290 Detroit Road will not sit vacant much longer.

Thomas English Development is requesting that the city’s Board of Zoning plus Building Appeals vote to accept a proposal for two commercial buildings, consisting of a financial institution, medical office and restaurants, as well as a variance for 14 parking spaces.

Code requires 149 parking spaces and the applicant proposes 135 parking spaces. Stay tuned for more information as the application process continues through the city’s Planning Commission and City Council.

PetSmart opening: The Avon Commons 18, 300-square-foot PetSmart store will have a grand starting at 9 a. m. Oct. 8 (next in order to Target). Soft opening will take place this week. The pet specialty store also offers grooming and dog training services.

Bakery to close, new one coming: Within days after the owners of Mimzy’s Bakehouse, 32824 Walker Road, announced that the shop is closing Oct. 16, a new bakery has already announced that it will be moving in.

Mimzy’s Bakehouse owners posted on social media that due to some family medical issues, they are closing.

The post states: “We have spent two years of our lives building and nursing the bakery and would love to see someone keep it going. We love all of our customers and are so amazingly grateful for the amazing level of community support. ”

Within a week, Susan St . Aubyn-Zeyer posted that her business, Susan’s Sugar & Spice, will be moving into the bakery space, with a tentative grand opening expected to take place Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), with a special for any military personnel.

According to information posted on the bakery’s website, St . Aubyn-Zeyer, a former Spanish teacher, has been making cakes, chocolates and pastries for almost 20 years.

Library project: The main entrance (south side) from the Avon Lake Public Collection will be closed temporarily for door replacement Oct. 10-14. Patrons are asked to use the north entrance or curbside pickup.

For entry, park and walk around the east side of the building (closest to the church) to the north entrance doors. If using curbside, park on the west side of the building (near the dumpsters). Fall leaf pickup begins: The city’s Public Works Department will be picking up leaves now through December (weather permitting).

Leaves should be placed on the tree lawn area, not in the street. Residents are reminded to keep catch basins clear of debris to reduce flooding during heavy rains.

Leaf piles should only contain leaves. Leaves plus branches should be separated, as they are collected with different equipment. Branch pickup is not a regular service during fall leaf season.

Refrain from putting leaves in islands of cul-de-sacs, as it is difficult for large trucks to maneuver around those areas.

City crews follow a route through the city and there is no specific day for pickup. Depending on the amount of leaves to be collected, it can take the crews as long as two to three weeks to complete a full route.

Kimble Recycling & Disposal Inc. will also be picking up leaves simultaneously through December. Leaves can be put in paper bags or even other personal containers of 33 gallons or less. Personal containers should be labeled “yard waste” and placed at curbside on your regularly scheduled day for garbage pickup.

NORTH RIDGEVILLE

Garden Club meeting: The Garden Club of North Ridgeville will meet at 6 p. m. Oct. eleven at the Sandy Ridge Reservation, 6195 Otten Road.

The speaker for the evening will be Amanda Davidson, tour and education director of the Lorain County Historical Society. The program will discuss homes and gardens of 19th century Elyria.
